500Startups, Geeks on a Plane, and OurCrowd

Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting dinner for Dave McClure and his coterie of geeks from his Geeks on a Plane (#GOAP) trips. It was the first time GOAP visited the Middle East and we heard from many attendees that they plan to come back quickly and often. From the 500Startups crew, Dave attended along with new partner, Shai Goldman and super-duper events superwoman, Sheila Goodman. We’re happy to have met with Dave and his merry band of startup entrepreneurs to talk about investing and building companies in the Startup Nation. We’d love to hear from all of you and get your insights from your travels once you return. Looking forward to doing it...

OurCrowd’s Jon Medved reveals secrets of Startup Nation at Yeshiva University

OurCrowd’s founder and CEO, Jon Medved recently appeared on a panel hosted at Yeshiva University. At an October 24 event presented by Yeshiva University’s Sy Syms School of Business titled Understanding Israeli Entrepreneurial Success, Jon addressed the cultural aspects that have made Israel such a compelling destination for investors over the past decade: [bra_blockquote align=””]We say, ‘Support Israel because of shared values, support Israel because we’re a democracy, support Israel because it makes military sense, we have shared enemies. But now Israel is coming to the rescue just as the U.S. needs new jobs and new economic ideas, and companies are finding their innovation and next steps in Israel.[/bra_blockquote] Jon also discussed the relative “safety” the Israeli stockmarket has provided investors recently.  He shared the dais with Nadav Kidron, CEO at Israeli biotech firm, Oramed, as well as with J.J. Sussman, a YU grad who’s been an important player in Israeli high tech over the past decade. [bra_blockquote align=”right”]’Safe’ is not a word you normally associate with Israel, but if you look at the results, we’ve had over 160 percent total...

Hacking Israeli startups, worldwide

AngelHack has decided to bring a hacking competition to Tel Aviv, marking the first time they will ever be here. AngleHack is a company built to help startups reach the next level by mentoring them, advising them, and setting them up with the right people. Some would say that there is no better place than starting up a company than Israel, but that doesn’t necessarily prepare the companies to work globally. Tomorrow, November 9th, AngelHack will pick the best 25 start ups in Israel, mentor them for 6 weeks, then fly them to Silicon Valley to meet with companies like Facebook and Google. These Israeli startups will then learn the tricks of the trade and be prepared to work abroad. Companies like AngelHack are continuing the trend that we have seen over the last few years. A few years ago, few events like these reached Israel, and now Israel is a prime target. Israel raised more money from venture capital per capita than any other country, including 20 times more than Europe and double that of the US! OurCrowd...
