Florida Hospital Tampa is now offering a breakthrough technology that produces three-dimensional virtual reality (VR) models of a patient’s brain. Florida Hospital Tampa’s Surgical Reality program allows neurosurgeons and patients to see inside the body with a precision never before available. Using the same advanced VR technology used in military flight simulators, Surgical Reality combines magnetic resonance (MR), computerized tomography (CT) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans of patients to provide personalized, three-dimensional views of their brain tumor or aneurysm. Effective voice recognition in real-world environments is hard for at least two reasons. First, the voice-recognition system has to be able to recognize words with a very high degree of accuracy. Second, the system has to be able to identify and isolate the speaker in environments where there is a good deal of ambient noise. [Maniv Portfolio Company in Forbes] Good Optics: Oryx Vision wants your robot car to see very, very clearly

Led by Menlo Park-based Bessemer Venture Partners, Oryx raised $17 million in a Series A round to accelerate R&D for sensors based on its “coherent optical radar” system. Additional investors included Maniv Mobility and Trucks Venture Capital, while Bessemer partner Adam Fisher joins Oryx’s board as it staffs up and moves out of the lab to commercialization.
