Hundreds of doctors, nurses and other frontline medical workers have died after catching the coronavirus from their patients. Hospitals are racing to install remote monitoring technology that will allow them to treat COVID-19 patients while reducing the risk of infection for medical staff.

Tyto Care is an OurCrowd portfolio company whose remote health monitors have been deployed in 16 hospitals, including coronavirus quarantine wards in Israel, the United States and elsewhere, and used successfully for hundreds of COVID-19 patients.

Tyto Care technology uses AI to diagnose patients based on data that can be collected using its kit and a regular cellphone. Patients can also buy the system to use in their own homes and feed the data to their doctor, saving a trip to the hospital. Tyto’s AI algorithms can detect issues like swollen tonsils, throat inflammation and lung disease, enabling doctors to make a diagnosis without touching the patient.

“In this situation with COVID-19 you really want clinicians and professionals to stay away as much as you can from sick people, or people that are currently in quarantine, and let them be diagnosed remotely whether they are in a clinic, hospital, a hotel, or whether they are at home,” says Dedi Gilad, Tyto Care CEO and co-founder.

“Clinics, ERs and urgent care are all swamped,” Gilad says. “People are trying to avoid it, if possible. Health organizations want people to stay at home if they don’t need urgently to come. This is where Tyto will really allow this interaction to happen remotely.”

Tyto Care CEO Dedi Gilad tells OurCrowd CEO Jon Medved about how the remote monitoring device is already serving patients and staff across 16 hospitals in Israel.

Tyto allows anyone with a smartphone to conduct “a full remote visit with a primary care clinician, including the full physical exam, including the imaging of the ear, throat, the skin, heart, lung and stomach,” Gilad says. “It’s a really comprehensive way for a clinician to diagnose the patient remotely.”

In March, the company’s TytoHome telehealth platform received the prestigious Parent Tested Parent Approved seal of approval from PTPA Media after a successful 30-day trial by American parents. The kit is available at Best Buy and other major US outlets.
